A ter em conta

Many people love the Caipirinha, but not many people know the history of the world’s most famous Brazilian drink.

Like many events in Brazilian history, there is more than one version, and caipirinha is not different. Then let’s get started:

  • Let’s start with the popular version according to which the drink was first created as a medicine and would have been invented by the farmer Paulo Vieira in 1918. By this time, when some of his workers became sick due to an outbreak of Spanish flu, he would have made a mixture with lemon, garlic and honey, however, instead of alcohol, so often used to boost the therapeutic effect, he would have used cachaça, also widely used. Eventually, someone decided to take out the garlic and honey. Then they added a few spoonfuls of sugar to sweeten the drink. Ice came later to battle the high temperatures.
  • Following the second version of an academic approach, some historians claim that caipirinha was created by large landowners in Piracicaba (São Paulo) in the 19th century, not as a medicine, but as a local drink during large and important celebrations, praising the strength of sugar cane cultivation around the region..

There are several types of fruits that can be used to make caipirinha, such as: lemon, strawberry, passion fruit, pineapple, watermelon, kiwi and, of course, grapes!
